Prescription Policy
How psychiatrists on OpenAccess issue e-prescriptions, and what they cannot prescribe online.
Effective 29 September 2026
1. Who can prescribe
Only registered medical practitioners, such as psychiatrists, can prescribe. Counsellors and psychologists do not prescribe medicines. Every e-prescription carries the prescriber’s name, qualification and registration number.
2. What can be prescribed online
- Prescriptions follow the Telemedicine Practice Guidelines, 2020 and the Drugs and Cosmetics Act, 1940.
- Some medicines can be started only after an in-person or video consultation, and some need regular monitoring.
- Narcotic and psychotropic medicines restricted under the Guidelines, and Schedule X medicines, cannot be prescribed online.
3. Using your e-prescription
- Your e-prescription is available in your account.
- It is valid for 30 days unless your prescriber says otherwise.
- Use a licensed pharmacy, follow the dose you were given, and never alter or share a prescription.
- Repeat prescriptions need a follow-up consultation.
